D. J. Rodriguez is a Chicago-based US and Canadian baritone known for a rich, expressive sound and a thoughtful, text-driven approach to performance. His work encompasses opera, oratorio, choral, and contemporary vocal repertoire, with a particular affinity for music that explores emotional depth, memory, and human connection.
He has performed with the internationally recognized Chor Leoni, as well as a range of highly regarded Vancouver-based ensembles, including Vancouver Cantata Singers, Postmodern Camerata, Erato Ensemble, and Cor Flammae, contributing both as a soloist and ensemble artist. In these contexts, Rodriguez appeared as the bass soloist in Mozart’s Requiem with United Voices and Chamber Orchestra, and participated in the premiere of Debris, a cantata by Canadian composer Rita Ueda, with Postmodern Camerata, highlighting his strong engagement with both canonical and contemporary repertoire.
Opera Canada praised his voice as “a very well controlled baritone; sonorous and articulate,” following his performance with Erato Ensemble in The Four-Note Opera.
Originally active in Vancouver’s vibrant choral and contemporary music scene, Rodriguez is now based in Chicago, where he continues to pursue solo and ensemble work across operatic, choral, and concert settings.
Rodriguez studied voice at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the University of British Columbia, where he developed a strong technical foundation and a collaborative, musician-centered approach to performance.
